On the go
Posted by Gregg at 08:47 AM

I recently came across a company called Ki-Bi Mobile Technologies that is big in Europe and Asia. Their mobile technology will do well when they break in to the US market since we are always on the move. It was only a matter of time before we received all our information on any of a number of our mobile devices. With TIVO at home you don’t watch commercials any more so advertisers reaching you there is not so effective. You know you have your mobile phone or blackberry in your hand at all times. What better way to reach the masses with ads, news, music, photos, email, games, games with ADS and oh yeah, you can make a few phone calls too. Of course Google is jumping in-is this just the beginning? You can even download a church sermon and listen to it on your IPOD. The mobile technology industry is booming-can we keep up? more

The Return of Reason

Admit it - wasn't there a moment sometime in 1999 that you believed the market could sustain it's ridiculous valuation? Didn't you throw all you knew about business out the window to make sense of a company valued at 1000 X revenue? I did. A lot of smart investors I knew did. So did scores of investment professionals. Maybe we've learned something after the two year hangover we've all lived through. more

A Moment of Silence
Posted by Gregg at 01:40 PM

For a few years from the late 80's through early 90's I lived in SOHO on Thompson Street. One of my most memorable visuals was how the towers of the WTC loomed over the neighborhood -- they looked even more enormous in contrast to the low rise, homogeneous skyline of SOHO. Today, looking for a way to privately commemorate 9/11 I walked over the corner of W. Broadway and Spring. It's just a short walk from my office so I arrived at about 8:45. It looked like a typical weekday morning, a thin but steady stream of people headed to work, people just walking by unaware of the significance of the time or location. But, when I looked across the street there was a man about my age gazing south in the direction where the towers were. A few minutes later the man left and a woman took his place. I walked back to my office - maybe someone came and took my place. I don't think anyone else noticed what we were doing and I think that's a good thing -- I can't imagine anyone in this city that doesn't understand the significance of today but I'm glad the world didn't stop at 8:46 either. I hope those more directly affected than I can someday feel the same way. more

I didn't think they sold enough of them yet to be stolen? And in NY the only people you see on them are the cops. more

Rather than have the standard web site with static content we've decided to use blogging technology to enable user generated content. Special thanks to Louis Atkinson and highermind.org! more

Getting going
Posted by Gregg at 03:12 PM

In 95 I got a dial up account from pipeline. Armed with my 14.4 modem and long RS 232 cord I ventured into cyberspace. Remember when that term was used seriously? I connected to IRC and watched unintelligible text scroll down the screen - after an hour I gave up trying to join a chat. Eight years later it's not a very different experience trying to get my newsreader to interface with movable type. The difference being that I was able to find someone through Craigslist to install MT on my server in less that an hour. It's actually exciting to experience the combination of mystery and possibility once again. more
