A More Rational Bubble ...
Posted by Gregg at 10:24 AM

Next Internet, a ... I hate to say it ... Web 2.0 incubator is getting attention as both a portend of good and bad times ahead. Is Next a better model in an environment where revenue growth and profitability matter or have they simply fogetten the lessons that should have been learned from eFinanceWorks, ICG and CMGI? more

Antisocial Networking
Posted by Gregg at 10:33 AM

DEC tried it in the 80's, SixDegrees almost had it right in the 90's and now there's a slew of new companies in the social networking space. As a recruiter networking and networks are the life blood of my business so there's no one that would like to see these businesses succeed more than I would. But there's a problem - networking is social but text based communication is not, with the possible exception of IM. The foundations of "networking" are trust and relationship - very difficult bonds to establish. I believe these online social networks need to build bridges to the off line world to be successful. Linked In and Always On seem to exist only on online - most people I know have signed up but few use them. In contrast, VisiblePath, leverages technology to make connections between people by visualizing paths to contacts but enables them connect off line. It's nice that Jim knows Mary but if he's a schmuck there's no way I'm introducing him to John - using online social networks I'll never know. Our business relationships are among our most valuable assets and potentially most fleeting. To achieve success social networks must enhance our real world relationships not replace them. more

The Wireless Home
Posted by Gregg at 01:33 PM

It's too easy to pass up. Buy an access point for about $50, plug in a couple of cables, an adapter into the USB port on your computers or Tivo and you've got a home network. Ironically, the most trouble you're going to have is with the most mature technology in your configuration - the MS operating systems that you're running. Adding a few more inexpensive devices and the infrastructure you've just built for less than $200 lets you share music, photos and video on multiple devices around the house. Should've bought that GE fridge that scans the UPCs and places my order with Webvan. more

Easier to be Honest
Posted by Gregg at 02:30 PM

I'll admit it. I've stolen music and the internet's been my wheel man. The point is not that I've done it but why. I don't believe content ought to be free - I'm a capitalist. I'm not too cheap to pay - I have hundreds of CD's and much of what I downloaded I already own anyway. Until recently, it's plain old been easier to get digital content from a file sharing service than a legitimate music source. With the evolution of services like Rhapsody and MusicMatch the tide is turning in favor of the artists and labels. more
